House passes new resolution to end military action in Iran

The House has approved a new War Powers Resolution on Thursday in a narrow 214-208 vote to end U.S. military involvement in Iran.

No voting Democrat opposed the measure, while four Republicans broke with their party to support the resolution.

“More airstrikes, more taxpayer dollars, and no attention to American troops, innocent civilians or to your pockets,” said Rep. Pramila Jayapal of Washington, who led the measure on the House floor, in a video on Facebook.

This is the second time the House has passed a resolution aimed at limiting President Donald Trump’s military authority over Iran. The first time it succeeded was last month, in a 215-208 vote.

“The President’s war with Iran has been an unmitigated disaster. The costs are rising every day, yet the President is choosing to double down on his failures,” said Rep. Jason Crow of Colorado, a former Army Ranger and paratrooper, in a statement. “Congress has already voted once to stop this reckless war. The American people oppose this war and want our leaders to end forever wars.”

The four Republicans who voted with the Democrats were Reps. Tom Barrett of Michigan, Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania, Thomas Massie of Kentucky and Warren Davidson of Ohio. Two Democrats and seven Republicans did not vote, according to the House Clerk.

The vote comes after four U.S. service members were killed in action in Jordan and Iraq during strikes this past week. The soldiers’ remains returned to the U.S. in a dignified transfer at Dover Air Force base on Wednesday.

The U.S. completed its 12th consecutive day of strikes in Iran on Wednesday night. The two countries began trading strikes this month after both accused the other of violating a June ceasefire.

Iran has resumed targeting oil tankers moving through the Strait of Hormuz, and the U.S. Navy reinstated its blockade of Iranian ports.
