Evacuation warnings were issued in parts of San Diego County on Wednesday morning because of an active wildfire on Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, Calif.
All evacuation warnings and orders were lifted Wednesday afternoon.
The Camp Pendleton Fire Department responded to the fire in the November Training Area near Wire Mountain Housing that started at 10:01 a.m. PST on Wednesday, according to the department’s website.
CAL FIRE ground and air resources responded to the scene, alongside the base’s fire department and Oceanside Fire Department.
“With active fire behavior and spot fires, there are threats to critical infrastructure and evacuations have been issued,” the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection incident updates stated.
At 1:12 p.m., CAL FIRE reported that the fire reached 800 acres. The fire was later estimated at 560 acres, with the reduction attributed to more accurate mapping by aerial intelligence aircraft.
Camp Pendleton posted an update on Facebook at 1:30 p.m. stating, “There are no additional residential evacuation orders and no safety threat to personnel aboard the installation.”
CAL FIRE also posted a video showing a C-130 airtanker dropping fire retardant.
The fire department notified base residents and the surrounding communities that smoke would be visible before issuing the evacuation warning.
An evacuation order was issued for Oceanside Municipal Golf Course. The Camp Pendleton Golf Course also evacuated due to the fire’s threats to the structure, according to a Camp Pendleton Facebook post.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
