Two Massachusetts National Guard personnel sustained minor injuries Wednesday evening after their vehicle was involved in a rollover highway crash in Willington, Conn.
Both personnel were transported for medical evaluation and treatment.
“We are grateful for the rapid response and professionalism of the Connecticut State Police, local fire departments, EMS personnel, and all first responders who assisted at the scene,” the service said in a statement Thursday.
The Guard’s M1075A2 Palletized Load System vehicle, assigned to the 181st Engineer Company (Vertical) at Joint Base Cape Cod, Mass., was en route to Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in New Jersey for scheduled training.
In a video obtained by NBC CT, service members can be seen running away from a rolled-over vehicle that caught fire. The incident remains under investigation, though the service said “initial reports indicate the incident may have involved a mechanical failure.”
“The military recognizes that vehicle accidents remain among the leading causes of injuries and fatalities affecting service members,” the service said in the statement. “We take extensive measures to mitigate risk through rigorous driver training, vehicle maintenance standards, safety oversight, and operational risk management procedures.”
More information will be released as it becomes available.
