A former soldier assigned to Fort Riley, Kan., chose not to contest the charges against him in the death of a civilian man as his second jury trial was set to begin.

Jonathan M. Lee, 29, was a sergeant at Fort Riley in February 2025 when he was charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of Carron Carter, 22, in a Junction City home about five miles from the base, according to court records. Lee had previously lived in the home where the shooting occurred.

Lee was separated from the service Aug. 15.

His first trial, in Geary County, ended in November with a hung jury.

Lee on Monday pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to his attorney Jason Belveal. That means he did not contest the charges but did not admit guilt.

As part of the plea agreement, attorneys agreed to recommend consecutive sentences of seven years, Belveal said. A sentencing hearing is set for June 15.
