Stars and Stripes publishes a mix of original reporting and select third-party content to digital readers to deliver a broad range of news, information and perspectives alongside our core military coverage. This includes syndicated world news, entertainment and lifestyle features, and other supplemental material that helps provide additional context to the day’s headlines.
Due to a recent directive from the Department of Defense, Stars and Stripes must significantly reduce the use of syndicated and third-party content on our digital platforms. It is the department’s determination that this material is widely available through other outlets. As these changes take effect, readers may notice a reduction in some familiar features and a decrease in the amount of external content that helps provide broader news awareness.
Importantly, this directive does not affect Stars and Stripes’ staff-produced reporting. The guidance explicitly states that Stars and Stripes’ independent news coverage will remain free from censorship. Our newsroom will continue to report without interference on the issues, policies and events that matter most to service members, their families and the global defense community.
We understand that some readers valued the additional perspectives and variety that third-party content provided. While those offerings may change, our commitment to independent, military-focused journalism remains the same.
