(Tribune News Service) — It’s no accident that a country star is developing a “luxury tiny home resort” near an Alabama military base.
Darryl Worley’s “Awful Beautiful Life” Luxury Tiny Home Resort is scheduled to open late this spring in Enterprise near Fort Rucker, according to promotional information. It’ll feature 75 tiny homes, a resort lagoon pool, a fitness center, a pickleball court and other amenities.
It takes its name from “Awful, Beautiful Life,” a 2004 single that was one of Worley’s three No. 1 country hits. It’s a song that celebrates the value of life despite its ups and downs. Worley said the vision for the development originated with Ronney Gilley, a developer who’s had his share of those.
“I won’t forget getting that phone call from my dear friend Ronnie Gilley as he shared this incredible vision last year,” said Worley. “I’ve done lots of good things with Ronnie, but this one sparked something in me as I knew we could help the families of those stationed at Fort Rucker.”
Worley said he thinks the development will serve more than one need for the community around the base.
“We’re building a project that’s a two-for-one for the military,” Worley said in a recent announcement. “One, there is a constant need for short-term lodging due to the constant in and out flow to and from the base and, two, we are building a lifestyle community with five-star amenities, while also delivering a home option for the military at an incredibly affordable price.”
Worley also suggested that it might appeal to “the massive migration of retirees that are moving south in record-breaking numbers.”
Worley’s remarks suggested units within the development will be available for short-term rental, long-term lease and possibly for sale. The community’s website did not provide any information on options or pricing, though it allows visitors to register to receive more information.
Photos and renderings on the site show a tight residential development with a layout akin to an RV park. Instead of RVs, it’s lined with small manufactured housing units. Each has a front porch.
Worley is a Tennessee native who earned a bachelor’s degree at the University of North Alabama and who got his first songwriting deal at FAME Publishing in Muscle Shoals.
Fifteen years ago, Gilley was known for developing the Country Crossing bingo complex in Dothan and for organizing the BamaJam music festival, held near Enterprise. But Gilley became embroiled in a political fight over legal gambling in the state, and in 2011 pleaded guilty to conspiracy and bribery charges for attempted bribery of state legislators.
Gilley served more than four years. He said he had learned not to take the simple things in life for granted, and that he looked forward to getting back in on the ground floor of development and construction.
His bio on the “Awful, Beautiful Life” development’s website presents him as a construction and land development expert who works in Alabama and Florida, and who “specializes in converting underutilized land into durable, income-producing assets.”
