Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, center, unveils a new license plate to honor the service, sacrifice and contributions of Michigan’s women veterans during an unveiling ceremony Nov. 10, 2025, in Dearborn, Mich. (Michigan Department of State)

(Tribune News Service) — Women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces have a new option to choose from when getting a new license plate for their vehicle.

Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson unveiled a new license plate to honor the service, sacrifice and contributions of Michigan’s women veterans during an unveiling ceremony Nov. 10 in Dearborn, Mich.

“This license plate isn’t going to guarantee women veterans in Michigan get all the support and resources they deserve, but we know that the visibility it promotes is a daily reminder to Michiganders everywhere of the role of women who serve,” Benson said. “May we continue to celebrate our veterans, not just this week and not just these days but every day as they serve and protect all of us.”

The new license plate features a vignette of a woman veteran to the left of the vehicle’s plate number and has “Her Service Our Freedom” inscribed.

The plate also has “Woman Veteran” below the plate number.

Benson was joined during the unveiling ceremony by State Senator Sylvia Santana (D-Detroit) and Lolita Tucker, Michigan’s Disabled American Veterans state commander.

Tucker, a woman veteran who served in the U.S. Army from 1996 to 2003, will be honored with the first woman veteran plate to be produced, Benson said.

As of September, there are over 44,000 women veterans in Michigan, accounting for 9% of the state’s veteran population, according to data from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs National Center for Veterans Analysis and Statistics.

With the new plate, Michigan now offers 33 license plate designs honoring past and present military members and their families.

Eligible Michigan veterans may order the woman veteran specialty plate online at the Michigan Department of State website or by scheduling a visit to a branch office.
