Google and the USO are teaming up to bridge the distance between deployed troops and their families with real-time 3D video calls.

Starting next year, Google Beam — an AI-powered 3D video communication system — will be installed at USO locations across the U.S., and around the world, as part of a pilot program, allowing service members and their loved ones to connect through life-sized, real-time 3D video that feels like they’re in the same room, according to a Google news release on Monday.

“Google Beam’s innovative technology will be a godsend to have in the hands of our military service members that are deployed around the world and to their families,” said Mike Linnington, CEO of the USO, in the release.

Formerly known as Project Starline, Google Beam combines an advanced AI video model with a light field display for a proper 3D effect to create a profound sense of dimensionality and depth — allowing users to make eye contact, read subtle cues and connect as if they were face-to-face. The system features a giant television screen with custom cameras and sensors developed by Google.

“We’re thrilled to partner with the USO and support our nation’s active-duty service members,” said Andrew Nartker, general manager at Google Beam. “Google Beam will help deployed service members have the opportunity to feel closer to their families for moments big and small.”
