CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Tribune News Service) — A shooting in Fort Collins, Colo., involving an F.E. Warren Air Force Base airman has been ruled a murder-suicide as an act of domestic violence, according to the Larimer County Coroner’s Office.
In the early hours of Sept. 30, Fort Collins Police Services (FCPS) responded to reports of a shooting in the 100 block of West Fairway Lane, Fort Collins, Colorado.
Upon their arrival, they found the suspected shooter, 20-year-old Airman 1st Class Marcus Evan Jackson, deceased. His death was ruled a suicide by the coroner.
Police also located the victim, 18-year-old Alyssa Paige Reardon, in need of medical attention.
Reardon was transported to Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland and died from her injury Oct. 1. Her death was ruled a murder, according to an FCPS news release.
The coroner determined that the cause of death in both cases was gunshot wounds.
“No one should ever have to live in fear or experience violence from someone they love or trust. As the investigation continues, we remain committed to supporting the victim’s loved ones and all those impacted by this devastating situation,” said FCPS Chief Jeff Swoboda.
Though the manner and cause of death have been determined, the case is still under investigation. “We want anyone facing abuse to know you are not alone, help is available,” the FCPS news release read. “Texting 911 is an option if you can’t call.”
Both Jackson and Reardon were Colorado residents, but Jackson was a security forces member assigned to the 90th Missile Security Forces Squadron, 90th Missile Wing in Wyoming.
He was assigned to F.E. Warren Air Force Base in November 2023 and entered active duty May 2023. He was promoted to his current rank in July of that year.
The 90th Missile Wing released a statement regarding Jackson’s identity but did not include the nature of the incident.
“As the investigation continues, we are working closely with local authorities into the circumstances surrounding this incident,” Col. Terry Holmes, 90th Missile Wing commander, said via the press release. “Our focus is on providing support to those affected and maintaining cooperation with law enforcement and investigative agencies.”
The release stated that the case is currently under investigation by the Fort Collins Police Services and that the 90th Missile Wing is fully cooperating with their efforts.
“Due to the nature of the investigation, no further details will be provided at this time to preserve the integrity of the ongoing inquiry,” the release said.
If the base is not leading the investigation, then it will only release information strictly relaying that an airman was involved, not including details of the case, said Lt. Raegan Lockhart with the 90th Missile Wing Public Affairs office when the Wyoming Tribune Eagle reached out for comment Tuesday.
Lockhart said that the wing leaves it to the investigating agency to release details of the incident out of respect for the investigative process.
This is the third time this year an airman from the 90th Missile Wing has been involved in a shooting incident. In all three instances, a 90th Missile Wing airman has been identified as the shooter. In the two other incidents, the victims were also airmen.
