MANAMA, Bahrain — The U.S. Embassy has warned Americans in Bahrain about the threat of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus.

While there have been no reported cases in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia — connected to Bahrain by a causeway — has had 41 reported cases with 26 resulting in death, according to the World Health Organization.

The WHO reports that since September 2012, there have been 55 confirmed cases worldwide, 31 of which have resulted in death. The cases originated in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates, according to a WHO statement from June 7.

However, WHO officials have not issued any travel warnings for the region.

In a message released Monday, the U.S. Embassy urged Americans in Bahrain to take common sense precautions, such as regularly washing hands and avoiding contact with anyone who appears to be sick.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends all Americans on the Arabian Peninsula “monitor their health” and see a health care provider if they develop a fever and symptoms of a lower respiratory illness, such as cough or shortness of breath.

So far, most cases have occurred in adult males with a median age of 56 years. There have been two cases of children contracting the virus, according to the CDC.

Approximately 6,500 U.S. personnel serve in Bahrain in support of U.S. Navy activities.
