Iranian ballistic missiles were intercepted Saturday over a Kuwaiti base hosting the U.S. Air Force, Kuwait’s military said.

The retaliatory attack on Ali Al-Salem Air Base came after Israel and the U.S. carried out joint strikes against Iranian targets earlier in the day.

The interceptions resulted in fragments and debris falling near the base, the Kuwaiti army said in a statement posted to X.com. The Kuwaiti base hosts American and other international forces.

Elsewhere in the country, a drone strike at Kuwait International Airport on Saturday evening caused minor injuries to some workers and limited damage to the passenger terminal, Kuwaiti authorities said.

Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister, Antonio Tajani, said the runway sustained extensive damage, Italian news outlet ANSA reported. U.S. Central Command has not made any statements regarding damage at the desert base.

Iran launched a barrage of counterstrikes across the Middle East on Saturday. Plumes of smoke and explosions could be seen coming from Naval Support Activity Bahrain.

Americans across the region were advised to shelter in place as sirens warned of incoming attacks.

Qatar, which hosts U.S. personnel at Al Udeid Air Base, intercepted a number of attacks, Qatar’s Defense Ministry said. Two missiles reached the base Sunday, Qatar’s official news agency reported, adding that there were no reports of casualties.

The United Arab Emirates, which also hosts U.S. troops, said it shot down a wave of missiles without any damage, and Jordan intercepted two ballistic missiles on Saturday, Reuters reported.

Smoke could also be seen rising from a U.S. base near the airport in Irbil, in the northern part of Iraq, The Associated Press reported.
