WASHINGTON — The White House announced plans Tuesday to name Robert Hastings as assistant Secretary of Defense for public affairs and to appoint Gordon Heddell as acting Inspector General for the Defense Department.

Hastings, who previously served principal deputy assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs, is a retired Army major and worked in the past as vice president of corporate communications at BAE Systems, Inc.

Heddell has served as inspector general for the Department of Labor since 2001. He is a retired Army chief warrant officer who also served 29 years in the Secret Service. Heddell will be replacing the current Inspector General, Claude Kicklighter, who resigned to take a teaching position at George Mason University.

The Senate must approve both nominations. No timeline has been announced for those hearings.
