USS Kearsarge ends mission to assist Haiti after stormsThe USS Kearsarge left Haiti on Friday, completing a 19-day disaster relief mission in the storm-ravaged Caribbean nation.
During its support to relief efforts in Haiti led by the U.S. Agency for International Development, Marine and Navy helicopters from the Kearsarge flew more than 100 sorties, delivering more than 3.3 million pounds of food, water and other relief supplies to Haitian communities devastated in recent weeks by several tropical storms and Hurricane Ike.
U.S. Navy and Air Force engineers helped Haitian officials assess the condition of roads and bridges damaged by the storms and determine the extent of repairs needed.
A team of medical personnel conducted health assessments in several towns and villages, providing basic medical care to more than 1,000 Haitian citizens. Kearsarge will remain in the Caribbean through November as part of Continuing Promise 2008, a humanitarian assistance mission to several nations in the region.
