A 20-year-old U.S. soldier stationed in Vilseck, Germany, died Monday evening in a one-car accident at the U.S. Army Training Area in Grafenwöhr.

The soldier died at the scene of the accident, according to a news release from the German police in Eschenbach.

The soldier was driving on Panzerringstrasse headed toward Grafenwöhr when his car, a BMW, went off the road, hit a concrete road block and skidded into a roadside pole, the release said. The driver was trapped in the car, which was destroyed in the accident, the release said.

An ambulance, a helicopter and 24 men from Grafenwöhr’s volunteer fire department responded to the accident scene, according to the release.

Silvia Igelmeier, an Eschenbach police officer, said there is a speed limit of 60 kilometers (about 37 mph) per hour on the street. She said it isn’t clear what caused the accident, which is under investigation.
