Mail room operations at the Tower Barracks post office in Grafenwoehr, Germany, were halted for about three hours Tuesday after a suspicious package was discovered by two Pond Security K-9s. The package contained open cans that smelled of dog food, officials said.

Security personnel evacuated the surrounding area, including the Red Cross and USO, while bomb disposal technicians were called in to investigate. The nearby elementary school was not affected, according to base spokesman Nathan Van Schaik.

Military police deemed the area safe after about three hours. The affected facilities were then re-opened to the public.
