The fourth annual Running of the Herd kicked off  Monday, Nov. 8, at Forward Operating Base Shank in Logar Province, Afghanistan, with a 10-kilometer race that coincided with the 24-hour run taking place in Bamberg, Germany. Soldiers of the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team and neighboring units in their respective communities gathered for the run, which commemorates a key operation conducted by the brigade during the Vietnam War that began Nov. 8, 1965. it also honors all the fallen soldiers of the brigade, according to unit officials.
