Derrick Lewis, a recent graduate of Ramstein High School in Germany, was awarded the National Merit Baylor University Scholarship by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

The Waco, Texas-based university will provide Lewis with stipends that range between $500 and $2,000 per year and are renewable for up to four years of undergraduate study.

Award recipients are selected by collegiate officials from finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program who will attend their institution.

The committee reviews candidates’ academic records, standardized test scores, contributions and leadership in school, community activities, submitted essays and other information submitted by the students’ schools.

Lewis previously participated in the 2009 Research Science Institute at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and was featured on the Department of Defense’s “Armed with Science” blog.
