KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany — More than 40 students from military families living in Europe were among this year’s 670 recipients of college scholarships awarded through the Scholarships for Military Children Program.
The $1,500 scholarship prizes were awarded to 44 students in Europe, with one declining because of his appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., according to the official list of scholarship recipients, posted at http://www.militaryscholar.org/.
The Defense Commissary Agency and Fisher House Foundation, which supports military families, team up to offer the scholarships; manufacturers and organizations that do business with the commissary system provide the funding for the scholarships, according to an announcement from the administrators of the program.
Applicants for the 2012 program were required to maintain a minimum 3.0 grade point average, participate in voluntary school and community activities, demonstrate leadership qualities and write an essay on “Whose four faces would you place on a 21st century Mount Rushmore type of monument, and why?”
More than 5,000 students applied for the scholarships at commissary locations worldwide, with at least one scholarship awarded at every DeCA location, according to organizers.
The scholarship program, which began in 2000, is open to unmarried dependents, younger than 23, of active-duty personnel, reserve/guard and retired military members or survivors of servicemembers who died while on active duty or of individuals who died while receiving military retirement pay. Details for 2013’s program will be available in December at http://www.militaryscholar.org/.
