WIESBADEN, Germany — Military officials are advising Americans to avoid Frankfurt through Saturday amid anti-capitalist protests expected in the city.

“Americans are advised to avoid the area where large crowds and possible violence may occur,” said a message posted by officials on U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden’s Facebook page. Wiesbaden is the closest major American military base to Frankfurt.

U.S. Army Europe spokesman Bruce Anderson said, as a rule, USAREUR advises troops, civilians and family members to avoid protests and large crowds, adding that people should always stay aware of what’s going on around them.

On Wednesday, police officers started clearing hundreds of demonstrators with the Occupy movement who have been camped out since October, according to media reports. The camp is being cleared before the European Central Bank begins a conference on monetary policy and the first of the protest rallies gets under way, Bloomberg News reported.
