The empty boots topped with a firefighter’s helmet stood center stage, a symbol of the many who died. A Navy band performed a mournful rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Servicemembers stood in formation, heads bowed in tribute.

More than 200 people gathered Tuesday morning at the Capodichino base of Naval Support Activity Naples, Italy, for a memorial honoring the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in the United States. During the ceremony, Capt. Scott Gray, commander of NSA Naples, recalled the uncertainty surrounding the attacks.

“Eleven years ago, our nation changed forever. In fact, our perception of the world changed forever,” Gray told servicemembers attending the ceremony. “Every hero that day and every day for the conflict that followed … they are the ones we will remember.”
