Italian police have launched a summerlong operation to catch vendors of high-priced, knock-off goods and those who are buying the items.

An Austrian tourist visiting the Jesolo beach in Veneto was fined 1,000 euros Sunday after haggling with a Senegalese vendor over a fake Louis Vuitton handbag — which he sold to her for 7 euros — according to an article in the Italian daily Il Napoli.

The 65-year-old tourist and the vendor were under surveillance of a newly formed, 20-member task force created to crack down on the buying and selling of counterfeit goods at the popular tourist destination, which is frequented by U.S. personnel stationed at the bases of Aviano and Vicenza in northern Italy.
