The Army has identified the soldier who drowned Saturday while rafting on the Ammer River in Germany as Sgt. 1st Class Salaam Brown.

Brown was assigned to the NATO School in Oberammergau when he was reportedly carried away by the river’s current after the boat capsized, according to a NATO release. He was 39.

Brown had been on an organized trip with others from the NATO School and had been wearing a flotation device and wet suit at the time of the accident, according to The Associated Press.
