The Department of Defense announced late Monday that Sgt. Jose M. Caraballo Pietri, 32, of Yauco, Puerto Rico, died Sunday in Badghis province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire.

Pietri was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 84th Field Artillery Regiment, 170th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Baumholder, Germany.
