NAPLES, Italy — The Navy is investigating a security incident at Naval Support Activity Naples after a driver breached a security checkpoint and entered the base Thursday.
The incident occurred at 12:15 p.m. at the base’s Capodichino site, home to U.S. 6th Fleet, when a driver failed to stop for a routine identification check at the base’s main entrance, said a base spokesman.
Navy and Italian security forces immediately closed the main gate and detained the driver, the spokesman said.
The spokesman would not say whether the driver was male or female or if the person was part of the base community. He also would not identify the location where the driver was stopped or whether emergency barricades designed to keep unauthorized vehicles from entering the installation were activated, citing an ongoing investigation by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service and Italian law enforcement.
There were no other passengers in the vehicle, and the driver was subsequently released, the base spokesman said.
It was not clear how the driver evaded the identification check. In a similar September 2024 incident, NSA Naples security forces detained the occupants of a vehicle that also failed to stop at the main gate for an identification check.
In that case, the male and female occupants of the vehicle indicated they were attempting to return their rental car. The base is adjacent to Naples International Airport.
In addition to 6th Fleet, NSA Naples is home to Submarine Group 8 and Task Force 66, which is focused on integrating robotic and autonomous systems with manned platforms.
Navy Region Europe, Africa, Central also is located at the base.
