WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump on Friday announced a three-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine from Saturday through Monday, and the two sides will swap 1,000 prisoners from each country.

“Hopefully, it is the beginning of the end of a very long, deadly, and hard-fought War,” the president posted on Truth Social. “Talks are continuing on ending this Major Conflict, the biggest since World War II, and we are getting closer and closer every day.”

Trump added that he appreciates the agreement by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

“I thank the President of the United States and his team for their productive diplomatic involvement,” Zelenskyy said in a post on X. “We expect the United States to ensure that the Russian side fulfills these agreements.”

Earlier in the week, Zelenskyy announced a ceasefire for May 5-6, and Russia last week suggested a ceasefire for May 8-9.
