U.S. Army Europe and Africa is launching a new online renewal system for Defense Department personnel in Germany. The move is intended to make it easier for drivers to keep their registration up to date, USAREUR-AF said in a statement Monday. (Jimmie Pike/U.S. Air Force)

A new online vehicle registration renewal system is being unveiled for drivers in U.S. military communities in Germany that officials say will make things more convenient.

In the coming weeks, the first renewal notices will begin arriving by mail with a QR code linking to the secured online renewal site, U.S. Army Europe and Africa said in a statement Monday.

Users must ensure that their APO address is updated to access the service, the statement said.

To avoid delays, documents must be submitted at least 30 days before current registrations expire, or personnel will be required to visit a registration office in person. The system will not accept renewals within 30 days of the expiration date.

“Users must complete the renewal process and have the updated registration and decal in hand before the expiration date,” USAREUR-AF said.

The online service is available only for renewals within the same community where a vehicle was initially registered.

If drivers have moved and have outdated APO addresses or license plates, they are ineligible for the online service and may be in violation of regulations, USAREUR-AF said.

A step-by-step guide for the renewal process can be found here.
