Europe briefs: Spangdahlem Air Base raises Katrina funds
Groups at Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany, have raised more than $16,500 for hurricane relief victims since Sept. 19.
The groups raised the money by soliciting donations at work centers and at collection points around the base such as the commissary and base exchange, said base spokeswoman Iris Reiff.
They also held a softball tournament to raise money for airmen at Keesler Air Force Base, Miss., which received considerable damage from Hurricane Katrina, which struck the Gulf Coast region of the U.S. in late August.
Base youth programs raised the most money, handing over two checks worth $6,500 to the base commander on Friday.
Crash involving sailor kills man near SigonellaAn Italian was killed Sunday in a car collision with a U.S. sailor on a road near Naval Air Station Sigonella, Italy, according to the base spokesman. A passenger in the Italian’s car was injured, and the U.S. sailor suffered a broken wrist, Lt. Jon Groveman said Monday.
The collision happened about 10:30 p.m. Sunday on SS-192, a two-lane road that leads from the city of Catania to the U.S. Navy installations of NAS 1 and NAS 2. It was unclear Monday to which base the sailor was heading, Groveman said.
U.S. military officials were the first to arrive on the scene and immediately called for Italian rescue workers and investigators, Groveman said.
The Italian driver was pronounced dead at the scene, and the passenger was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The sailor, returning from Catania, was treated at the U.S. base hospital, Groveman said.
The crash is under investigation by U.S. military and local police, he said.
