STUTTGART, Germany — Spc. Clifford W. Sneed of the 587th Signal Company, 52nd Signal Battalion was sentenced Tuesday to a reduction in rank and a $1,500 fine for unlawful use of marijuana.

A seven-member military panel reduced Sneed in rank to private E-2.

Sneed, who was acquitted of rape during the same court-martial, was to pay his $1,500 fine in $500 increments over three months. He also was sentenced to 45 days of restriction to post and 45 days of hard labor. The panel deliberated for five hours before acquitting him of rape.

Sneed, 25, a systems analyst, pleaded with the jurors to let him remain in the Army. He could have been sentenced to two years in prison and given a dishonorable discharge on the marijuana charge, to which he had pleaded guilty.

Airman charged with assault on comradeRAF LAKENHEATH, England — A 48th Maintenance Squadron airman has been charged with aggravated assault in connection with a July attack on a fellow airman.

Airman First Class Jared B. Hamm will face a special court-martial in October after he allegedly attacked Airman Byron D. Corley Jr., according to a charge sheet released by the 48th Judge Advocate General’s office.

Hamm allegedly struck Corley on the head and neck with a glass bottle on July 17, according to Air Force court records. Air Force officials would not release further details of the alleged attack before the court-martial.

Because Hamm faces a special court-martial, there was no Article 32 held before formal charges were filed.

If convicted, Hamm faces a maximum penalty of a bad-conduct discharge and one year confinement.
