Memorial for Rota Seabee scheduled

NAVAL STATION ROTA, Spain — A memorial service for a 23-year-old Seabee who died of a brain aneurysm last week will be held at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Rota chapel.

On Jan. 3, Seaman Mario Gaspar, an electrician with Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 4, suffered the aneurysm and died three days later after unsuccessful emergency surgery at a hospital in Cadiz, Spain.

The construction battalion is home-ported in Port Hueneme, Calif., and Gaspar was on a six-month deployment to Rota.

Gaspar is the fourth person to die in a series of unrelated incidents in the Rota area since Jan. 1. The other deaths included two sailors and the wife of a U.S. servicemember stationed at Rota.
