The Air Force will hold a memorial service Thursday for a Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany, airman who was killed Sunday morning in a two-car accident near the base.

Senior Airman Jason Bechel, an aircraft maintainer with the 52nd Equipment Maintenance Squadron, was a passenger in a vehicle traveling on L39 a few miles from the U.S. base when the accident occurred around 5 a.m., according to the Air Force.

The female driver of the car survived the accident. A German motorist in the second car also survived. The German police are investigating the incident with the help of Air Force investigators, said Capt. Tom Crosson, a spokesman at Spangdahlem.

The memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. in Hangar 1.

Italy petty officer up for CNO sailor of the yearPetty Officer 1st Class Shawn Kline of Naval Support Activity La Maddalena, Italy, security was recently selected vice chief of naval operations shore sailor of the year.

He competed against five other sailors, including two sailors from Navy special operations commands and one from naval intelligence.

Kline now faces a handful of other sailors in the chief of naval operations sailor of the year competition, which will take place this month.

If he wins, Kline will be meritoriously advanced to chief petty officer, along with the Pacific and Atlantic sea sailors of the year and Navy Reserve sailor of the year.
