The Defense Department is urging people who would send something to a deployed servicemember, but don’t know a soldier, to help their families instead.

Lt. Col. Ellen Krenke also urged the public not to attempt to circumvent the agency’s rules by distributing lists of soldiers’ names and addresses on Web sites, for example. That too, she said, presents a security risk.

Master sergeant honored

SPANGDAHLEM, Germany — A production superintendent from the 81st Aircraft Maintenance Unit in Spangdahlem recently received the Lew Allen Award, one of the top honors given by the Air Force.

Master Sgt. Timothy Peasley, lead production superintendent for the 81st AMU, was honored for job performance, sortie production and leadership.

Peasley’s boss, Senior Master Sgt. James Callahan of the 81st AMU, said Peasley is a “remarkable planner” and placed him among the elite of the Air Force.

Peasley oversees the maintenance and sortie production for a group of about 20 A-10/OA-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft at Germany’s only fighter base, where Callahan compared him with the conductor of an orchestra, “out there with all the different instruments,” directing them in harmony.
