WIESBADEN, Germany — The court-martial of Sgt. Seth Y. Adomako-Adjei, a 1st Armored Division soldier accused of conspiracy, fraud and larceny, began Tuesday at Wiesbaden Army Airfield.

Adomako-Adjei is accused of filing false medical claims for which he received $129,000 from Tricare over a two-year period.

“The issue in this case is not whether fraud occurred, but who did it,” lead defense counsel Capt. Lisa Simon said in her opening statement.

The prosecution’s Capt. Jennifer McKeel characterized it differently. “This case is simple. It’s about greed,” and taking advantage of the system, she said.

Adomako-Adjei pleaded not guilty to three charges and 19 specifications against him. If convicted on all accounts, Adomako-Adjei faces 145 years in prison, a fine to be set by the trial panel, reduction in rank to E-1, a dishonorable discharge and forfeiture of all pay and allowances.

Adomako-Adjei is accused of conspiracy with another soldier, Sgt. Martin K. Hinneluther, to file 30 medical claims worth $370,000 for the soldiers and their dependents for treatment in Ghana. Both are naturalized U.S. citizens from Ghana. The trial will resume Wednesday morning.
