WüRZBURG, Germany — The 1st Infantry Division has announced the winners of its soldier of the year competitions.

Spc. Ella Martin, an admin specialist with the 1st ID’s intelligence and security office, has been named soldier of the year.

“Specialist Martin is an excellent soldier,” said Sgt. Maj. Gary Kass, the unit’s sergeant major. “She’s hard working, pleasant, never gets stressed out and is willing to work long hours.”

Staff Sgt. Joshua Grzywa, of the 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, was named the division’s top noncommissioned officer.

Grzywa, who has earned a Bronze Star Medal, serves as the mortar section sergeant in the regiment’s Headquarters and Headquarters Company.

1st AD soldiers held in connection with fire

Two 1st Armored Division soldiers were taken into German custody in connection with a fire at the Baumholder Rathaus, or town hall, at 3 a.m. Thursday.

The soldiers are suspected of breaking and entering and simple arson, according to a 1st AD news release Friday. The fire caused millions of euros in damage, according to the statement.

The names and ranks of the soldiers were not released.

German authorities currently have jurisdiction of the case, but the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command is providing assistance, the announcement said.
