From aboard the USS McCampbell off the Japan coast, Boatswain’s Mate Ashley Norman shares in this Stars and Stripes video what her job duties entail.

Like many of her colleagues, Norman is involved with most of the vessel’s deck duties, from signaling for incoming helicopters to anchor detail practice.

“Everybody’s exhausted—but we get through, we do very good,” she said.

Norman said because she entered the Navy at an older-than-average age, she challenges herself to keep up.

“It makes me push harder on my PRTs, ‘cause I want to beat them.”
