SASEBO NAVAL BASE, Japan — Sasebo Naval Base will host a “friendship fleet week” with the Japanese navy Aug. 24-27.

Fleet week events will include American-Japanese team sports competition at Nimitz Park and the Fleet Gym, according to the base public affairs office. Sailors with the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force will tour the amphibious assault ship USS Essex and dock landing ship USS Harpers Ferry, and officers from both navies will gather at the JMSDF museum in Sasebo city for discussions.

The fleet week celebration is part of a series of local events this year marking the 50th anniversary of the U.S.-Japan security alliance.
