11:35 a.m. Monday, Sept. 28, Japan time: Surigae enjoyed a brief life as a super typhoon. The Category 4-equivalent beast continues moving east-northeast away from Okinawa, and this should be our final report on Surigae.

At 9 a.m. Japan time Monday, Surigae was about 190 miles east of Kadena Air Base, moving east-northeast at 10 mph, packing 140-mph sustained winds and 170-mph gusts at storm’s center. U.S. bases on Okinawa remained in seasonal Tropical Cyclone Condition of Readiness 4 through Monday morning.

Long term, Joint Typhoon Warning Center forecasts Surigae to remain over the northwest Pacific, weakening gradually as it moves, passing about 170 miles southeast of Yokosuka Naval Base at mid-morning Thursday as a severe tropical storm. Keep an eye on Yokosuka’s five-day forecast.
