CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa — A U.S. civilian employed at Kadena Air Base on Okinawa and his Japanese wife were in police custody this week for allegedly possessing and growing marijuana in an off-base home, according to Okinawa prefectural police.

Robert Harold Swenson, 33, a worker in a flight simulation unit, and Sachie Miyagi, 37, were found to have 140 grams of marijuana and 78 plants growing in a room and balcony at their Uruma residence last month, police said. Despite the large amount, police said Swenson claimed the marijuana was for personal use.

The arrest occurred May 28 but was announced Wednesday by police. The couple has not yet been indicted and the investigation is ongoing.
