CAMP HUMPHREYS, South Korea — The Army is investigating the death of a 2nd Infantry Division soldier who was found unresponsive in his barracks in South Korea.

Staff Sgt. Nicholas M. Scalzo, 28, an artilleryman from Selma, Ore., was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel on Monday at Camp Hovey in the northern city of Dongducheon, according to a press release. The cause of death was under investigation, it said.

Scalzo was assigned to the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, which deployed to South Korea in July for a nine-month rotation.

Brigade commander Col. Kevin Capra expressed “deepest condolences” to Scalzo’s family and friends.

“Nicholas was an integral member of the Steel Dragon and Greywolf teams. We are all deeply saddened by the loss,” he said in the statement released Wednesday.

Scalzo joined the Army in Portland, Ore., in July 2012, the military said. He was assigned to Fort Stewart, Ga., after completing training at Fort Sill, Okla., and joined the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team at Fort Hood, Texas, in 2016.
