SEOUL — U.S. Army Garrison Daegu officials have released the name of the soldier killed in a car accident.

Sgt. 1st Class Christopher Burks was a driving west on Highway 30 in a rental car when the accident occurred around 6:30 a.m. Thursday between Sangju and Cheongwon. He was transported to a South Korean hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Burks’ spouse and two children, both minors, were traveling with him and were treated for injuries.

He was assigned to the Headquarters and Headquarters Company at Camp Henry.

A South Korean patrol officer from the 10th Highway Patrol office said Burks hit a guardrail, and officers responded to the crash after emergency calls were made by passersby. He said alcohol was not a factor in the accident.

The military said the cause of the accident remains under investigation.
