CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa — Elementary school students on this Marine Corps base were asked to bring their own water to class Tuesday after a pipe break rendered taps undrinkable.
The water main break occurred Monday afternoon somewhere near E.C. Killin Elementary School “impacting water pressure after students released for the day,” said a post that evening on the MCCS Okinawa – School Liaison Officer’s Facebook page.
The break was repaired, but water was not potable Tuesday, according to the post.
“Parents are asked to send their students to school with bottled water,” the message said. “The school will also have bottled water available at school.”
About 400 students attend E.C. Killin in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade, according to the school website.
The information in the post also was distributed to parents Monday evening, Department of Defense Education Activity-Pacific spokeswoman Miranda Ferguson told Stars and Stripes by email Tuesday. She referred further questions to Marine Corps Installations Pacific.
E.C. Killin is situated alongside tower housing units in a separate area north of the base’s main area.
Also Monday, a non-scheduled water outage occurred in the southern portion of Camp Foster, according to a post that afternoon on the Camps Foster & Lester Facebook page.
“Maintenance is currently involved,” the message said. “No estimated completion at this time.”
The post had not been updated as of Tuesday morning. Marine Corps Installations Pacific did not immediately respond to an email query on Tuesday.
