A multiagency search continued Wednesday in rough waters around Guam for a 22-year-old man swept beyond the reef line off Tanguisson Beach while swimming the previous evening, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
The search is being handled by Coast Guard Joint Rescue Sub-Center Guam, 45-foot boat crews from the Apra Harbor station and the cutter Frederick Hatch, along with Guam Fire Rescue and the U.S. Navy’s Sea Combat Helicopter Squadron 25, according to an email Wednesday from Chief Warrant Officer Sara Muir, spokeswoman for Coast Guard Micronesia/Sector Guam.
The Frederick Hatch’s crew searched the area offshore, she wrote. Guam Fire and Rescue deployed drones with thermal-imaging capability and planned small boat, jet ski and dive team operations as conditions allow.
A small craft advisory was in effect for the Mariana Islands until 6 p.m. Thursday, according to Guam Homeland Security.
Large breaking waves of nine to 12 feet were expected for west- and north-facing reefs, the department said. Tanguisson Beach, on Guam’s northern half, faces west.
The National Weather Service called for high surf and rip currents along west-, north- and east-facing reefs.
Dangerous swimming and surfing conditions were expected and the Coast Guard advised inexperienced swimmers to stay out of the water.
