An American soldier died three weeks after he was critically injured last month in a single-vehicle crash on Okinawa, according to the U.S. Army.

Pvt. Tristan Murray, 18, of Knoxville, Tenn., died Dec. 26, U.S. Army Japan spokeswoman Maj. LeeAnn Sagucio said by email Thursday.

Murray was found unconscious with “significant injuries to his lungs, brain, as well as bone fractures to his right leg,” Capt. Sean William Richardson, spokesman for the 10th Support Group at Torii Station on Okinawa, said by email Thursday. The incident remains under investigation.

Murray served as a satellite communication system operator with the 78th Signal Battalion on Fort Buckner, Sagucio said. He enlisted Oct. 21, 2024, and completed basic training and advanced individual training as a satellite communication systems specialist at Fort Gordon, Ga.

On Dec. 3, Murray was in a Japanese mini truck northbound on Route 58 in the Kaneku district of Kadena town when the vehicle crashed, the Okinawa Prefectural Police said at the time. They believe the truck struck an electrical pole.

Murray was taken to U.S. Naval Hospital Okinawa in critical condition, Sagucio said last month.

Murray had no pulse when first responders took him to the hospital, police said.
