US military continues relief efforts in Colombia after earthquake

The U.S. military continues to deliver lifesaving assistance and supplies to communities across Colombia hardest hit by the devastating earthquake that struck a week earlier.

Over the weekend, a U.S. Air Force C-17 Globemaster transported and distributed aid to Medellín and Bogotá, the capital, as part of ongoing U.S. relief efforts, according to U.S. Southern Command.

“The United States stands in solidarity with the Colombian people during this crisis,” SOUTHCOM said in an X post Sunday.

The State Department announced $11 million in additional humanitarian aid Friday following the 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck Aug. 10. Combined with the $15.5 million announced immediately after the quake, total U.S. assistance now stands at $26.5 million, the department said.

“The State Department continues to coordinate with Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella and the Colombian government to assess and respond to earthquake-related needs,” the department said in the statement.
