A small modular drone case designed by 82nd Airborne Division paratroopers will go into limited production just months after the soldiers presented their case to Army leaders at a “Shark Tank”-style innovation competition.

The system that is being sent, known as Merops, flies drones against drones. It is small enough to fit in the back of a midsize pickup truck, can identify drones and close in on them.

The Pentagon-led anti-drone task force said its tests are meant to alleviate worries about how the lasers are used and to specifically address FAA concerns.

The drones were launched by CENTCOM’s Task Force Scorpion Strike, which was specifically formed to develop and deploy one-way attack drones at scale. 

The new tournament brought together troops to share their latest tactics, innovations and knowledge about small drones and to discover the remaining capability gaps across the service.
