The Vilseck girls basketball team was barred from participating in the season-ending DODDS-Europe basketball tournament because several team members violated the school system’s alcohol policy, school officials said Wednesday.

Several players were found in possession of alcohol, according to DODDS officials.

DODDS-Europe administrators are trying to determine how many players were involved and how they got the alcohol, said Margret Menzies, a spokesperson for DODDS-Europe.

The act of removing the team — not just the players who allegedly committed the transgressions — is in accordance with several DODDS-Europe policies.

“It’s our understanding that so many players were involved that they wouldn’t have had enough players to continue anyway,” said Karen Seadore, athletic director for the school system.

The team, with a 3-10 record entering the tournament, was seeded last among the nine Division I schools.

DODDS-Europe policy states that the use of controlled substances by athletes is prohibited at any time, according to a news release about the incident.

Prior to every athletic season that involves students traveling and staying overnight, students and their legal guardians are required to fill out a student behavior expectations form that lists 14 rules the students must abide by. One regulation includes no consumption of alcohol during the trip.

Vilseck administrators declined to talk about the incident and directed questions to the DODDS-Europe public affairs office.

As a result of Vilseck’s removal, all games at Heidelberg High School are being moved forward 75 minutes.
