WIESBADEN-NORDENSTADT, Germany — Defending boys champion Jun Koide of International School of Brussels earned a shot at defending his tennis title with two victories Friday in the DODDS-Europe tournament at the Tennis Center Vitis.

“It’s harder this year,” the top-seeded Koide said after beating Wiesbaden’s Dani Lohmer 6-2, 6-2 in Friday’s quarterfinals and Ankara’s fourth-seeded Adam Beveredge 6-3, 6-3 in the semis. “I’m a little tired.”

Hanau senior Devin Hayes will take on Koide for the championship. Hayes defeated Ramstein’s M.J. Massicotte 6-1, 6-0 in the quarterfinals and third-seeded Michael Sanchez of Heidelberg 6-2, 7-5 in the semis.

“I’m looking forward to the match,” said Hayes, who beat Sanchez for third place in last year’s event. “I’ve looked forward to playing him ever since I started taking tennis seriously in the 10th grade.”

Hayes said his game is just where he wants it for the title match.

“Everything’s working fine,” he said. “My serve’s really getting in there. I won the match [against Sanchez] on an ace.”

Aces came in handy, too, for Marymount International School of Rome senior Flavia Cirrincione in the girls tournament.

“I got my first serve in almost every time,” said Cirrincione, who thumped Ramstein’s Jena Massicotte 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals and conquered second-seeded Priscila Roney of ISB 6-1, 6-3 in the semis.

Cirrincione will take on top-seeded Jackie Esguerra, a Lakenheath freshman, in Saturday’s final while still trying to get comfortable on the indoor carpets.

“I’m not used to this surface,” said Cirrincione, who is used to clay courts. “The ball moves faster.”

Cirrincione said she had an opportunity to watch Esguerra, who defeated Heidelberg’s Stephanie Best 6-3, 6-2 in the quarters and Bitburg’s Ashley Weston 6-1, 6-2 in the semis.

“She’s a good player,” said Cirrincione, who’s already pleased with her progress here.

“I just like to play,” she said. “Even if I don’t win, I’m happy with what I’ve done so far.”

Cirrincione’s victory over Roney deprived ISB’s squad of a chance to sweep all four titles.

Coach Guy Santagati’s Raiders are still in the running for three crowns, thanks to straight-sets semifinal victories by their top-seeded girls doubles team of Paula Glover and Izumi Takeuchi and their second-seeded boys duo of Nikolas Serpanos and Ken Koide.

Glover and Takeuchi topped Lakenheath’s Morgan Parkerson and Kallie Hedberg 6-2, 6-2, while Serpanos and Ken Koide held off Patch’s Joe Morrow and David Vega 6-4, 7-6 (7-2).

Taking on the ISB girls in Saturday’s final will be Heidelberg’s duo of Paulina Ryan and Christina Staik, 6-3, 6-1 semifinal winners over Patch’s Michelle Whitbeck and Tamara Oppliger.

The ISB boys will face Ramstein’s top-seeded pair of Matt Omdal and Matt Luthman. Omdal and Luthman reached the final with a 6-2, 7-5 triumph over Laknheath’s Phil Burroughs and Dan Devereaux.

Consolation play begins at 9 a.m. Saturday, with the championships matches scheduled to begin around noon. There is no admission charge.
