Munich’s “Starkbier” (Strong Beer) season opens Thursday in the Bavarian capital and runs until March 25. Its origins date to the 17th century Paulaner monks, who brewed this stronger beer to sustain themselves during their Lent fasting.

Named Salvator, this double bock beer contains not only more wort (mashed grain) but also more alcohol, starting at 7.5 percent. The official opening is March 9 in the Paulaner Wirtshaus on the Nockherberg (nockherberg.com), which continues the celebration until March 25.

But the Löwenbräu Kellar (loewenbraeukeller.com) jump-starts the season, opening Thursday and serving the specially brewed Triumphator beer until March 24, along with entertainment. If you can’t get into one of these venues, other breweries have joined in the tradition with their own strong beers.
