Team USA won’t be visiting Yokosuka Naval Base after all.
In Japan for the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) World Championships, Team USA had announced plans to travel to the base on Monday. But base athletics director Kyle Rhodus said USA Basketball officials called Friday to cancel the visit, saying the team wanted to concentrate instead on the 24-team tournament.
The round of 16 games in the world championships are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, with the quarterfinals to follow on Aug. 29. All games are at the Saitama Super Arena about 30 miles north of Tokyo.
While calling the Hoops for Troops visits Team USA made earlier this month to bases in South Korea good ones, Team USA officials “indicated that the coaching staff wanted to stay focused on what they’re here for,” Rhodus said.
Tentative plans were in the works for Team USA to rent a gymnasium in Tokyo for practice and possibly having sailors bused from Yokosuka to there, but nothing definite had been decided by the weekend, Rhodus said.
