The USAFE women’s team capped an unbeaten run through the annual Combined Command-Air Headquarters Ramstein volleyball tournament with a 25-18, 25-20, 25-17 win over the German air force in Wednesday’s title game.
The championship victory in the tournament at Warendorf, Germany, gave the women their third straight crown in the six-nation event, according to USAFE’s Debra Ponzio.
USAFE’s men finished fourth in their half of the event, dropping the third-place match to the Royal Netherlands Air Force 18-25, 23-25.
Poland won the men’s tournament 25-18, 25-20, 25-17 over Germany, Ponzio reported.
Bamberg to host powerliftingThe 2008 U.S. Forces Europe powerlifting championships will be held April 19 at the Freedom Fitness Center in Bamberg, Germany.
Lifters wishing to participate should register before April 12, according to an IMCOM-Europe news release. At least 20 participants must be registered by April 12 for the meet to proceed.
Competitions for garrison and two-soldier Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers teams will be conducted in the event, which is open to all male and female ID card holders.
The meet will be sanctioned by USA Powerlifting, which requires 10 percent of the participants be drug-tested, organizers said in the release. Weigh-ins begin at 8 a.m. April 19 and competition at 10.
Soccer teams sought for Netherlands tournamentU.S. teams interested in playing in a 50-team, 20-nation tournament May 10-11 in the Netherlands should contact World Cup Football Tournament organizer Patricia De Jonge.
De Jonge said the tournament will emphasize friendship, not competitiveness. “The idea of this tournament is to bring nations together,” De Jonge said Thursday by telephone as she issued her invitation.
