Bitburg’s Lady Barons experienced both sides of the game as the high school softball season resumed.
On Friday, senior Alex Schmidt pitched both victories and went 3-for-5 at the plate as Bitburg swept fellow D-II opponent AFNORTH 18-3 and 14-8.
On Saturday, however, visiting Kaiserslautern of Division I spoiled the varsity debut of Bitburg starter Alicia Dorado by pinning 12-3 and 16-5 defeats on the freshman.
Ashley Van Amburg of Kaiserslautern was the winning pitcher in Game 1; Katarina Jastrab picked up the victory in Game 2.
In other weekend softball:
Patch 12-15, Wiesbaden 2-4: On Saturday at Stuttgart, Patch stayed unbeaten behind three-inning, complete-game victories by Vanessa Adderty and All-Europe selection Bianca Lopez.
Adderty, backed by Lopez’s 3-for-3 effort at the plate with a solo homer, two-hit Wiesbaden in the opener. Adderty helped her cause by going 2-for-3.
Lopez, who allowed three hits in the second game, helped herself with a two-run homer. Kara Johnson was 3-for-4 with a double and Anne Wasson was 2-for-5 with a solo home run.
Emily Gush ignited Patch’s seven-run fifth with a lead-off double.
Mannheim 10-10, Ansbach 6-13: On Saturday at Mannheim, Ansbach salvaged a split behind two doubles by Alex Scotti and a double each from Frankie Barrale, Hannah Tilly and Victoria Leon. Ansbach’s Katie Schuh reached base in six of her seven at-bats, and teammate Cassie Kaawaloa stole eight bases after reaching base four times.
Hohenfels 12-20, Vilseck 0-12: On Saturday at Hohenfels, All-Europe pitcher Mandy LaVanway won both games for the 2009 European D-III champions, striking out six and walking two in the opener and fanning seven without a walk in the nightcap.
Lakenheath 10-13, SHAPE 5-1: On Saturday at RAF Lakenheath, England, Whitney Brown was the winning pitcher in both games as the Lancers (2-4) picked up their first victories of the season.
Brown, who struck out 12 in Game 1 and six in Game 2, joined teammates Ali Parkerson, Nicole McBride and Alexa Stephanishen in collecting three or more hits in the doubleheader.
